The Daily Prayer Rule

The Sanctification of the Household

The Morning Offering

(Arising from sleep, stand with reverence and say:)

Through the prayers of our holy fathers, Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us. Amen.

Glory to Thee, our God, glory to Thee!

O Heavenly King, O Comforter, the Spirit of Truth, Who art in all places and fillest all things, Treasury of blessings and Giver of Life: Come and abide in us, and cleanse us from every impurity, and save our souls, O Good One.

(The Trisagion Prayers are said:)

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (3x)
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
All-holy Trinity, have mercy on us. Lord, cleanse us from our sins. Master, pardon our iniquities. Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities for Your name's sake.
Lord, have mercy. (3x)
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Morning Petitions

(The Troparia to the Holy Trinity:)

Having risen from sleep, we fall down before Thee, O Blessed One, and we sing to Thee, O Mighty One, the angelic hymn: Holy, Holy, Holy art Thou, O God; through the Theotokos have mercy on us.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
From my bed and sleep You have raised me, O Lord; enlighten my mind and my heart, and open my lips that I may hymn You, O Holy Trinity: Holy, Holy, Holy art Thou, O God; through the Theotokos have mercy on us.
Both now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Suddenly the Judge shall come, and the deeds of each shall be laid bare; but with fear let us cry out in the middle of the night: Holy, Holy, Holy art Thou, O God; through the Theotokos have mercy on us.
Lord, have mercy. (12x)

(The Nicene Creed:)

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the only-begotten... (The full Creed is recited here.)

The Evening Offering

(At the end of the day, stand before the Icons and say:)

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

(The Trisagion Prayers are repeated through the Lord's Prayer.)

(Troparia of Repentance:)

Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us; for laying aside all defense, we sinners offer this prayer to Thee as Master: have mercy on us!
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
O Lord, have mercy on us, for in Thee have we put our trust; be not exceedingly wroth with us, nor remember our iniquities, but look down upon us even now as the Compassionate One, and deliver us from our enemies...
Both now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Open unto us the door of Your compassion, O blessed Theotokos, that we who hope in You may not perish, but that through You we may be delivered from adversities; for You are the salvation of the Christian race.

Evening Petitions

(Prayer of St. Macarius the Great:)

O Eternal God and King of all creation, Who hast vouchsafed me to reach this hour: Forgive me the sins I have committed this day in word, deed, and thought; and cleanse, O Lord, my lowly soul from all defilement of flesh and spirit. And grant me, O Lord, to pass through the sleep of this night in peace, so that rising from my lowly bed, I may please Your all-holy name all the days of my life, and may trample under foot the enemies, both fleshly and bodiless, that war against me. And deliver me, O Lord, from vain thoughts that defile me, and from evil desires. For Yours is the Kingdom, and the power, and the glory, of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

(Daily Confession of Sins:)

I confess to Thee, my Lord, God and Creator, in the one Trinity glorified and worshipped, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, all my sins which I have committed every day of my life, and at this very hour, in deed, word, and thought; by sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch, and all my senses, whether voluntary or involuntary...

Into Thy Hands

(The final commendation before lying down:)

Into Thy hands, O Lord Jesus Christ, my God, I commend my spirit: Bless me, have mercy on me, and grant me life eternal. Amen.

(As you lay down, make the sign of the Cross and say:)

Let God arise and let His enemies be scattered! Let them that hate Him flee from before His face! As smoke vanishes, so let them vanish; as wax melts before the fire, so let the demons perish from the presence of those who love God and sign themselves with the sign of the Cross...

Glory to You, O Christ our God and our hope, glory to You. Amen.
